Barnett Newman was an Abstract Expressionist, working in the 1940s, 50s and 60s. After Rothko, he’s the pre-eminent Color Field painter, opting for large expanses of sensual color. Born in New York in 1905, the son of Russian Jewish immigrants, he’d hit his 40s before he hit on his signature mark: the zip. Newman’s so-called “zip paintings” used thin stripes of color against plain backgrounds…
